Parallax overdrawing nightmares

I had several sketches of what I wanted to achieve but this was an expeiment with using decent resolution sprites and layering to achieve a pseudo-3D/parralax effect to create depth. The problem with this is that it is grossly ineffecient. However I'm developing for desktop and it's going to be played on decent spec. machines so I let the performance take that hit.
